Repocellar

Label it.
Box it.
Clear the shelf.

Repocellar copies the GitHub repositories you're not using into private storage and checks the copy. On Personal you can take them off GitHub and put them back later, history included.

Free includes 5 GB. No card needed.

140 repositories on your profile. You work on twelve.

Tutorials, hackathons, client work from two jobs ago, the framework you tried for a weekend. They crowd your profile, your search results and every repository picker you open.

Deleting them feels risky. Archiving them on GitHub still leaves them on the list. So they stay, and the list keeps growing.

Repocellar gives them a box, a label, and a way back.

Four steps, in this order, every time.

  1. Step 1

    Copy

The Chrome extension copies the repository in your browser: the current files (Quick Backup) or every branch, tag and commit (Full Git Backup, Personal).

  2. Step 2

    Upload

The copy goes from your browser to your private storage over short-lived signed links. It does not pass through our application servers.

  3. Step 3

    Check

We read the stored copy back and compare it with what was built. If they don’t match, the process stops and nothing is removed.

  4. Step 4

    Remove — Personal

After the check, and after you type the repository’s name, the extension removes it from GitHub. Restore puts it back when you need it.

What's in the box

Quick Backup

Every plan

The current files of the default branch as an ordinary ZIP, each file matched against its Git hash. No commit history.

Full Git Backup

Personal

A bare Git repository with every branch, tag and commit. You can clone it with plain git, without Repocellar.

Archive

Personal

Back up, check, then remove the repository from GitHub. Removal only happens after a passing check and your typed confirmation.

Restore to GitHub

Personal

Recreate the repository under its old name or a new one. Restores only create new repositories — they don’t overwrite existing ones.

Download anytime

Every plan

Every backup can be downloaded as a ZIP, including after a subscription ends.

One account, two places

Every plan

The extension and this website share one account. What you save on github.com shows up in your dashboard.

Read the security overview
  • Browser to storage

Repository data travels from GitHub to your browser to storage over signed links that expire. Our servers handle accounts and checks, not your files.

  • Private by default

Each backup is stored in a private bucket under a random ID, encrypted at rest by the storage provider. Download links expire after ten minutes.

  • Tokens kept server-side

Your GitHub token is encrypted with AES-256-GCM and is not sent to the website. You can sign out any extension from Settings.

  • Removal needs two things

A repository is only removed from GitHub after a backup passes its check and you type the repository’s name.

Questions

What’s the difference between Quick Backup and Full Git Backup?

A Quick Backup is the current files of the default branch, like downloading a ZIP from GitHub, with no history. It is on every plan. A Full Git Backup is a bare Git repository with every branch, tag and commit that you can clone and push anywhere. It is part of Personal, and it is what Archive uses.

How do I install the extension?

After you create an account, your dashboard has a download button for the extension as a ZIP file and a step-by-step guide. You load it in Chrome through Developer mode. It is not distributed through the Chrome Web Store, so updates are manual — the dashboard tells you when a new version is out.

What isn’t included in a backup?

Anything that is GitHub data rather than Git data: issues, pull request discussions, wikis, releases and their files, Actions secrets, stars and repository settings. Pull request refs (refs/pull/*) are not copied either.

How large can a repository be?

Backups are built in your browser, so the practical limit depends on your computer’s memory. Repositories of a few hundred megabytes are routine; multi-gigabyte repositories may not fit. For those, use git clone --mirror from a terminal.

Should I keep another copy?

For anything you can’t afford to lose, yes. Repocellar checks every backup, but no single service should be your only copy of important work. You can download any backup at any time.

What happens if I stop paying?

Your backups are not deleted because a subscription ends. Personal stays active until the end of the period you paid for, then the account moves to Free and everything stays downloadable. If you store more than 5 GB, new backups pause until you upgrade again or delete older ones.

Which GitHub permissions does Repocellar ask for?

Access to your repositories (to copy and to restore them) and to your organizations (to restore into one). Permission to delete repositories is asked for separately, only when you first archive one.

Does deleting my Repocellar account touch GitHub?

No. Closing your account cancels any subscription and deletes your backups after a short grace period. Repocellar does not change anything on GitHub when you close your account.

Put the old ones away.
